There are two major colour trends this year and they are complete polar opposites, with nu-wave neon colour popping up on runways and being loved by the fashion pack, as well as au naturel highlights being the relaxed chic look of 2010. Oscar Cullinan, director of Oscar Oscar Salons and finalist for the 2010 Hair Expo Australian Hairdresser of the Year Awards, gives his expert advise on both of these major colour trends.
“On one-side of the story colour is really fresh, with an emphasis on enhancing your natural colour with multiple shades of complimentary highlights and lowlights as well as soft freehand Balayage to sun-kiss the ends of the hair.
At Oscar Oscar Salons we specialise in a technique we call micro-foiling, which is ultra fine highlights that create a shimmer of colour through the hair. This technique eliminates any obvious stripes of colour, as the foils are so fine they are barely visible, instead they blend to create a soft and very natural colour. This look also combines well with Balayage sections to brighten the tips and ends of the hair where natural sunlight would touch the hair.
On the other end of the spectrum there is an editorial influence, with a very bright colour army marching forward! I loved Abby Lee on the cover of Vogue with her fluorescent highlights! Our salons have had many requests for bright neon highlights in splashes of pink, blue and green, which look fantastic. It’s a great trend as people should have fun with their hair and wear it like a great fashion accessory. Bright colours will definitely be on the tips of every young fashionistas hair this year!”
