Androgyny’ by Oscar Cullinan is a culmination of the latest runway looks, editorial styling and hair fashion direction.

“This shoot was greatly inspired by the modelling sensation Andrej Pejic, as well as famous models that have a distinct tom-boy appeal such as Kate Moss, Agyness Deyn and Alice Dellal.

I have taken inspiration for these bold iconic models and interpreted the styling to create looks that are fashion forward, wearable and of course reflecting my own Oscar Oscar style of hairdressing.” – Oscar Cullinan

PASTEL ROMANCE BY PALOMA ROSE GARCIA

Paloma Rose Garcia, Master Stylist and Salon Partner for Oscar Oscar Salons in Sydney, is a star on the rise, her latest collection ‘Pastel Romance’ was recently awarded a Judges Recognition for the 2012 Hair Expo New Creative Force category, putting her collection in the top ten submissions nationally.

With a soft, feminine and vintage feel, ‘Pastel Romance’ is a stunning collection, which also perfectly represents Paloma’s style of hairdressing and love of elegant fashion.

For this year’s submission for New Creative Force 2012, I created six images, which I think have advanced hair fashion by recreating the current trend for vintage hair from the 20s, 50s and 60s and giving the look a modern twist and unique edge.

For this collection I used inspirations from popular culture, such as the hit TV show Mad Men, with its glamorous 1950s theme, as well as the current love of all things 1920s due to the hype surrounding the remake of the movie the Great Gatsby. By using these fashion era’s for inspiration, I have created my own interpretation of key looks such as the beehive, finger waves, and a bouffant and have created modern fashion-forward styles.

Working with Kym Ellery who styled the collection was also a great experience, she provided the perfect fashion accompaniment for my lady-like editorial style”  – Paloma Rose Garcia

FRINGE SENSATION

For 2012 we are lusting after full fringes that are cut with perfect precision. Session stylist and Salon Partner for Oscar Oscar Salons in Sydney, Paloma Rose Garcia, shares her favourite fringe styles for 2012, as well as who can wear them and how to style them.

THE SHORT 50’s INSPIRED FRINGE

What to Ask For? Ask for a straight blunt fringe, which sits above the eyebrows.  This is a Betty Page inspired fringe, reminiscent of 1950s Hollywood pin-up girls.

Who Does it Suit?

This is fringe is definitely a statement. Its suits girls that have a vintage fashion style, or alternative look.

However, I would avoid this fringe if you have a round or heart shape face as it isn’t the most flattering fringe. It is best suited to oval and long face shapes.

How to Style This Look? This look will need to styled daily, unless you have naturally very straight hair. If your hair has any texture and movement, you will need to comb and straighten your fringe using a styling iron and then keep it in place using a strong hold hairspray.

Celebrity Spotting: Rooney Mara (Girl With a Dragon Tattoo) and Katy Perry.

THE FULL-BODIED FRINGE

What to Ask For? A long thick fringe that sits at eye level.

Who Does it Suit? This fringe is great for girls with thick hair that has some texture and movement.

It also suits girls with long and oval face shapes, as the fringe helps to balance out the length in the face.

How to Style This Look? You need a small barrel brush to style this look. Also brush the fringe back and forth in opposite directions, as this will help brush out any kinks and allow the fringe to sit better.

Celebrity Spotting: Zooey Deschanel, Rachel Bilson, Rose Byrne & Jessica Alba.

THE CURTAIN FRINGE

What to Ask For? A fringe that you can center part that sits just past the eye level.

Who Does it Suit? This fringe is really flattering and incredibly versatile.

The longer length allows it to be also swept to the side.

You can also play with varying layers and lengths to help this fringe suit all face shapes.

It is also much more convenient as the longer length makes it easier to pin back or incorporate into braids and upstyles.

How to Style This Look? A barrel brush to blowdry the fringe forward, and then brushed to either side. Finish by parting the fringe down the middle.

Celebrity Spotting: Nicole Ritchie, Kate Moss & Elle McPherson

The ‘Alex Perry’ Ponytail

Monday night Oscar Oscar Salons were backstage at the Rossi Oscar’s Charity Gala in Brisbane, to create the perfect ponytail for the Alex Perry fashion parade.

Oscar Oscar Salons owner, Oscar Cullinan, shares his backstage-tips on how to re-create the ‘Alex Perry’ ponytail.

The ‘Alex Perry’ Ponytail:

The look was sleek and sophisticated, a perfect look for the modern red carpet. – Oscar Cullinan

Step 1: Start by creating poker-straight hair. Using small sections, detangle your hair with a a fine tooth-comb then slowly straighten with your hair using a styling iron for a perfectly smooth finish. We recommend the Cloud Nine wide-iron.

Step 2: Brush of all your hair up into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic. Make sure your hair is perfectly smooth by using your fine tooth comb to even out any bumps.

Step 3: Now rub a small amount of gel such as Aveda Brilliant Retexturizing Gel between the palms of your hands and use this to create a smooth, shiny finish to your hair and ponytail.

Step 4: Next take a small section of hair from underneath your ponytail to wrap around the base and conceal the elastic. Secure the hair with a bobby-pin.

Step 5: Finish the look with a strong hold hairspray such as Aveda Control Force.

The hair styling created was polished, modern and glossy, perfect for any girl who loves to give her credit card a work-out at David Jones!

Want the the glamorous waves as worn by Samantha Harris? Aveda shares their backstage secrets:

HAIR STEP-BY-STEP

 Glamour Wave

Glamour is coming back and this look is a great new way to wear waves. Create a great classic look and a new season twist with a strong pulled back sweep over one shoulder.

  1. Take a strong low part and start by blow-drying Aveda Volumizing Tonic into the hair focusing on the root area. If your feel you need more support, apply Aveda Phomollient to the roots through to the ends. A medium or large roller brush will smooth and create volume and bounce.
  2. Using large tongs and a little Aveda Witch Hazel hairspray, section the hair in long vertical sections and tong the whole head rolling each completed section into a barrel roll. Secure with a bobby pin.
  3. Once whole head is completed, give the hair a light spray of Aveda Air Control hairspray and leave to cool for 5–10 minutes.
  4. Take out all pins and use a large tooth comb or a brush with short bristles and turn your head upside-down brushing through hair gently. Flick head back and arrange your waves and curls with a low side part.

TOP TIP: Do not over-brush or comb at this stage. Over-brushing will take the volume out of it that you have just put into it. Less is more!

  1. Take a section from the part which has less hair and pull back into a diagonal line all the way to the back hairline finishing to 2 cm past the centre of the head on the side with the large wave. Secure tightly with a small band keeping the low ponytail swept to the front.
  2. Allow the rest of the hair to flow over this secured section that is kept over the shoulder to rest.
  3. Using Aveda Control Force, gently lift the hair at the roots and spray to give extra height. Fix with another spray of Aveda Control Force hairspray.

TOP TIP: When you want to set you completed style, spray Aveda Control Force hairspray from at least 10cm away and above the head. This will allow the hairspray to mist down onto your style, keeping the spray distributed evenly over the whole hair and fixing in place.
